The Chocolate Girl’s Guide to a buttery smooth complexion

I have a very deep and even skin tone that gets compliments rather often, so I decided to share my (borderline obsessive-compulsive) regimen to look like you’ve been drenched in creamy, glistening chocolate.

You will need:

 handheld pumice stone

Aveeno Positively Radiant Exfoliating body wash AND lotion ($8 each)

Booth’s Almond Oil Body Butter AND Booth’s Body Oil

Palmer’s skin fade cream(or any hydroquinone based bleaching cream)

In the shower:
Every morning, I apply the Aveeno to the pumice stone and massage it carefully over my entire body, making little gentle circles across the skin. It is very important to exfoliate as much of the body as possible. (The point being to eventually be even-toned all over) Start at the neck, move down your chest, tummy, and exfoliate your crotch if shaved (which, btw, is the secret to preventing razor bumps and maintaining a smooth irritation-free kitty). Then move to your arms, being sure to exfoliate the top side of the hands, forearms, and elbows. Next move to your legs, and go down the front paying special attention to the knees, ankles, and tops of your feet. Probably most important for a black girlie, you’ve got to exfoliate those nice, round ass cheeks! (Honestly, I enjoy this part) Make firmer circles on your butt, and be sure to massage the part directly under the cheek that’s prone to cellulite and discoloration. (I’ve found that daily firm massaging will actually reduce the appearance of cellulite).

After the shower:
Immediately after toweling off, apply the Aveeno Positively Radiant Body Lotion in the same manner as you exfoliated, being careful to get every inch of skin. Follow up with Booth’s Almond Body Oil. Finally, apply Palmer’s fade cream to obviously darker areas of skin i.e. knees, elbows, butt, larger, darkened scars. (note about bleaching creams: You must be persistent when using a fade cream because it will take a few months before any improvement is seen. Also, hydroquinone is a chief ingredient in fade creams; though a cosmetic godsend, it can be dangerous if used incorrectly, so follow closely the directions on the bottle).

Things to remember

  • only exfoliate as described once a day. During your second shower, use the exfoliating body wash on a loofah or washcloth.
  • Use the Booth’s Body Butter in place of the Aveeno lotion after your second shower
  • If the pumice stone irritates your skin, or you have generally sensitive skin, always apply the Aveeno using an exfoliator glove instead of pumice
All this may seem like a lot, but it really only takes about 30 minutes, shower and all, but if you do get weary of the routine, remind yourself that it is imperative for your job. But it doesn’t matter to me, I enjoy pampering my skin and you’ll get to love this routine too. But what you’ll really love is how your skin will look in a couple of weeks.
